Look for Roots and Signs of Life

One of the easiest tests any homeowner can perform only takes a shovel and a garden hose.

Dig a hole approximately twelve inches deep and fill it completely with water. Allow the water to drain, then fill the hole again. Watch how long it takes for the water to disappear.

If the water drains within an hour or two, your soil is likely very sandy and drains quickly. While that’s beneficial for preventing standing water, you may need to add organic matter to help retain moisture around newly planted roots.

If water remains in the hole for several hours or even into the following day, your drainage may be too slow for many landscape plants. In that case, improving drainage or selecting plants that tolerate wetter conditions may produce much better long-term results.

Pay Attention After a Summer Rainstorm

After one of Southwest Florida’s typical afternoon thunderstorms, take a walk around your property once the rain has stopped. Notice where puddles collect and how long they remain. Areas that stay wet well into the next day often indicate poor drainage, while spots that dry almost immediately are likely dominated by sandy soil.
